Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Positive AFB culture in liquid or on solid media
Collection Instructions: Actively growing organism in pure culture.
Shipping:
Specimens should be stored and shipped under the same conditions. Wrap specimen container in absorbent material and place inside a biohazard bag. Transport at room temperature. Ship to the Coralville location.
Temperature and Stability: Specimens should be shipped at 2-8°C and be received at SHL within 72 hours of collection.
Rejection Criteria: Specimens will be rejected if received under these conditions:

Ambient temperature. Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms. An additional processing fee will be billed for all mixed cultures. Specimens not received in the correct temperature ranges stated under "Temperature and Stability" will be rejected.
Expected Results:
Negative, Positive, Negative with contaminants, Positive with contaminants.
Comments
Identification of AFB isolates is billed by individual tests performed. A processing fee will be billed for all organisms submitted that are not in pure culture, as indicated under Unacceptable Conditions.
