Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Rectal or Perianal Copan Dual Swab.
Collection Instructions: Call the lab at 319/335-4335 before submitting. Use a Copan Dual Swab. Carefully remove the tube from the packaging, and label the tube. Pull the swab from the plastic packaging, being careful not to out the cotton tips.

Rectal swab: Insert the swab 1 cm (1/2 inch) beyond the anal sphincter and gently rotate against the walls of the rectum 3 times. Confirm swab is not overloaded with stool. Remove the cap from the tube by twisting. Insert the swab into the tube and firmly close.
    Perianal swab: Swab the perianal area 3 times and carefully place the swab in the labeled swab collection container.
      Diapered infants: The cotton swab may be used to swab the stool present in a soiled diaper.
        Shipping:
        Wrap specimen container in absorbent material and place each specimen inside an individually sealed biohazard bag. Transport specimen overnight at room temperature. Ship to the Minnesota Department of Health - Public Health Laboratory in St. Paul, MN.
        Temperature and Stability: Room temperature (15-30°C); stable for 5 days.
        Rejection Criteria: Specimens will be rejected if received under these conditions:

        Unlabeled or mislabeled samples.
        Expected Results:
        No Carbapenemase-producing organism isolated, Carbapenemase-producing organism isolated.
        Comments
        This testing is sent by SHL to the Minnesota Department of Health - Public Health Laboratory in St. Paul. This test and method will be named "Miscellaneous, Miscellaneous" on the SHL result report.
