Specimen Requirements | |||||
Specimen Type: | Yeast isolate specimen. Sample sources: Biopsy, Blood, Bronchial brushings, Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL)/washings, Cerebrospinal fluid/CSF, Peritoneal fluid, Pleural fluid, Scrapings/clippings, Sputum, Tissue, Urine, Wound, Other. | ||||
Collection Instructions: | Actively growing culture on suitable medium in sealed agar plate or slant. | ||||
Shipping: | |||||
Specimens should be stored and shipped under the same conditions. Wrap specimen container in absorbent material and place inside a biohazard bag. Transport specimen overnight at room temperature. Ship to the Coralville location. | |||||
Temperature and Stability: | Room Temperature; stable for 48 hours. | ||||
Rejection Criteria: |
Specimens will be rejected if received under these conditions: Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms. Isolates from environmental sources. An additional processing fee will be billed for all mixed cultures. Specimens not received in the correct temperature ranges stated under "Temperature and Stability" will be rejected. |

Comments | |||||
Most commonly isolated yeast species with pathogenic potential are Candida and Cryptococcus. A processing fee will be billed for all organisms submitted that are not in pure culture, as indicated under Unacceptable Conditions. | |||||
