Feb. 21, 2019 -- The lengthy outbreak of Salmonella Reading infections linked to turkey just got longer with 63 more infections since the last update on Dec. 21, 2018. At least four cases have been confirmed in Iowa. That raises the total number of human infections since the outbreak began in November 2017 to 279 cases in 41 states. Of 222 people with information available since then, 107 (48 percent) have been hospitalized. One death has been reported from California. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people infected in the outbreak reported buying many different brands of raw turkey products from multiple stores. Available data indicate that this strain of Salmonella Reading may be present in live turkeys and in raw turkey products. A single, common supplier of raw turkey products, or of live turkeys, has not been identified that could account for the entire outbreak. CDC provides more information on its outbreak page, including a U.S. map of reported cases. Courtesy of the National Public Health Information Coalition |
