From August through December, the Hygienic Lab tested more than 280 specimens that were positive for Bordetella pertussis (or whooping cough). Results were available, on average, within 26 hours of the time the specimens were received at the Lab. They were electronically reported to submitters, local public health departments, and the Iowa Department of Public Health so that steps to prevent a major outbreak could be rapidly taken.
