The Hygienic Laboratory earned gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design due to its eco-friendly construction and operation. Construction of the building that opened in 2010 combined the rigorous safety and design requirements of a public health laboratory with LEED requirements in five categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environment.
