The State Hygienic Laboratory offers both the total coliform bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa testing for Iowa's public swimming pool and spa regulations.
This testing is available at all three locations: Coralville, Ankeny and Milford, Iowa. Upon receipt of the samples, results are available the next day for both tests with state-of-the art methods used at the State Hygienic Laboratory. Pool managers can be notified by email when results are ready and can obtain these results via web access (or results can be mailed). As part of our pool program, bottles are shipped to facilities, and check samples are automatically sent when a positive result occurs. Expert staff members are also available for trouble-shooting guidance. General information about our pool program and these two bacterial contaminants can be found in the Bacteriological Analyses for Swimming Pools and Whirlpools/Spas brochure.
This testing is also available for private pool and spa owners as a good check of their pool or spa quality and maintenance. CDC's Healthy Swimming web page provides information about recreation water illnesses, pool water testing instructions, and other health and safety materials.
